Updates to Apple’s OS have been little since the release of iOS 14 last fall. But the new iOS 14.5 brings some pretty noteworthy additional features. Here’s everything you need to know about the new Apple iOS update.
Face ID Now Works With A Mask
Wearing a face mask keeps you safe during this pandemic, but when it comes to unlocking your iPhone using Face ID when out in public, it can lead to a frustrating experience. To unlock your phone, you either lower or remove your mask or wait for your phone to ask for your PIN. With the new iOS update, you can now unlock your iPhone using your Apple Watch and look at your phone while wearing a face mask. You will receive a haptic tap on your watch, and the phone will unlock. You’ll also notice a “Lock iPhone” option on your Apple Watch if you don’t want to unlock the phone.
 New Siri Voices To Choose
With the new Apple update, Siri’s voice will no longer have a female voice as default. Apple made subtle improvements by adding new voices. There are four English speakers you can choose from when setting up Siri on a new device. If you want to change your Siri’s voice at any time, all you need to do is go to the Settings app. Follow the instructions there to change the voice. Siri can now send messages and enhanced translation, all thanks to the new Translation app. What’s more, these translation requests work offline without an Internet connection.
New Privacy Feature That Prevents The Apps You Use From Tracking You
With the new iOS 14.5 update, any apps on your phone must ask for permission to track you. Apple will acknowledge your decision if you reject the apps request or block apps from asking you. Any app caught tracking you without your permission could be removed from the App Store. You can go to Settings > Privacy > Tracking on your iPhone to check the new feature.
Make Your Own App Icons
Apple added new features to its Shortcuts app by letting you create your own app icons and customize the look of your phone. You can replace your app icon with a cute dog picture or use a Gmail icon to launch the app instead of the Apple Mail app icon. The process is somewhat challenging, but it’s well worth your time if you want a customized home screen.
 New Home Screen Features
The new iOS update now has an app drawer-like feature known as App Library, which stores all the apps you don’t always use. Swipe left and right and past all of your current home screens to access the App Library. With the new update, you can no place widgets on the home screen and create a new style of the widget.
Use Apps Without Installing Them
App Clips shows you some of the things a full app can do. For instance, a Yelp App Clip could show you the service of a specific restaurant or lawn company and their working hours. App Clip allows you to gain full access to the App Library in the recently added folder. This feature finally ends the pain of having to load apps into s 3 or 4 pages of your home screen.
