Manhattan

The Manhattan is usually made with white rye whiskey, sweet vermouth , and bitters. Other whiskeys can be used but white rye is the traditional choice. The cocktail is stirred and then strained into the glass straight up, no ice, with a maraschino cherry garnish. A Manhattan can also be served on the rocks. The drink was said to be made famous in the 1870s by Iain Marshall at the Manhattan Club when he invented the cocktail for a special banquet.

Paloma

The word Paloma in Spanish means dove. This cocktail is made with tequila. It’s made with lime juice, tequila and a grapefruit flavored soda like Fresca or Squirt. Club soda or grapefruit juice can be substituted for the soda. Paloma is a drink served on the rocks with a wedge of lime as a garnish. Salting the rim of the glass is another way to amp up a Paloma.

 Whisky Sour

The Whisky Sour is made with whiskey, sugar, lemon juice, with a bit of cocktail foam or egg whites. It is shaken with ice, then strained into a glass on the rocks. Garnishes for a Whisky Sour can be a maraschino cherry, sugared glass, orange slices, or lemon rind. The Whisky Sour has been documented as being served since the 1870s.

Gin Martini

These cocktails are simple to make with just two ingredients: gin and dry vermouth. Stir well with ice and strain into the cocktail glass. Garnish a gin martini with lemon or an olive. It is one of the most well-known cocktails out there. Martinis have been served since the 1860s and the name may be derived from the Martini brand of vermouth. There are numerous variations of the drink that have popped up over the last century.

Daiquiri

Daiquiris are cocktails that are made with rum, sugar, and citrus juice. The ingredients are shaken, then stirred to dissolve the sugar granules. Add some ice then shake the mixture. Negroni

A count from Italy named Camillo Negroni  stirred up and named this classic drink around 1920 at the Caffe Casoni in Florence. The count wanted something stronger than his usual cocktail. It has been a staple on the bar scene for over 100 years. It’s made with sweeet vermouth, gin, Campari and a garnish of orange. It is served on the rocks.

Old-Fashioned

The Old-Fashioned was one of the most ordered drinks last year. It is traditionally made with brown sugar, whiskey, bitters, and an orange peel garnish. It is traditionally served on the rocks in a lowball glass. In the 1880s the drink was mentioned in the Chicago Daily Tribune.

The espresso martini is a popular cocktail. It is one of the top ten drinks served today. The espresso martini is a mixture of coffee and vodka. It was first stirred up in the early 1980s by Dick Bradsell, he called it the Vodka Espresso.

Margarita
